Making Connections

Over the past two weeks in reading we have been learning to make connections.

Good readers make connections when they read to deepen their understanding and bring meaning to what they have read.

There are many ways to make a connection. We can make connections to ourselves, other texts we have read, things happening in the world and things we see and hear through the media.

We know the difference between making a deep connections and a flat connection. We all try to make deep connections with whatever we are reading.

We have brainstormed some sentence stems to help us making deep, meaningful connections.

What connections can you make to the book you are reading at the moment?

Use the sentence stems to help you.

Describe whether it is a deep or flat connection.

    1. Hi Miss Spink,

I can't really make any deep connections to James and the Giant Peach.

P.S I will read my comments again and try and use the correct punctuation.

      Kind regards, Tatenda

  3. Dear Miss Spink,
It's Saturday today. I just finished my second book of the day.
    The titles were:
    The Mystery In Venice
    Play It Again Mozart
Within 'The Mystery In Venice', I made a connection to myself, it was when my mum, sister and I were shopping at a store and whenever I picked up an item, my sister would just stare at me and say " put that down, you might break it!!". It was hilarious looking back at that memory.
The other book was 'Play It Again Mozart', I personally enjoyed this one because I play piano and I've heard some really beautiful songs that were written on scores made from Mozart.

    Sincerely,

    1. Dear Kyla,

I am so glad to see you reading on the weekend and using the reading strategies we have learnt at school.

What was happening in 'The Mystery In Venice' to make that text to self connection? I can just imagine Kelsey saying that to you!

      Keep up the great work,

      Miss Spink

  4. Hi Miss Spink,

At the moment I am Reading a Book about a quests, after reading a few pages of the book I rembered that when I was little I went in a small quest just like the one in book. I believe that the connection that I have made is a deep connection and this connection is text to self.

  5. Hi Miss Spink,

The sentence I made my connection with was about Geronimo Stilton being wacked on the head with a purple umbrella. The umbrella belonged to an old mouse.
The story was superbly hilarious. Also, at the end of the story, he won the gondola race and helpped his new friend, Hope, to be allowed to be married with her true love, Arnold.

    Sincerely,

    Kyla A.C.P.S = )

I can make a connection to the book the top 100 scariest things on the planet. It was when I saw a big brown snake at Echuca-Moama in the bush, it is kind of scary we had to stand still until it slithered away, we were lucky it didn't attack us it was so big it looked a couple meters long, it was really scary. As you know I am also reading the Hunger Games but I can’t make any connections so far. The Hunger Games is very good I hope to read it all with in a couple of months. It is good because it is very detailed and I am very interested to see if Katniss will win the hunger games. She is very brave to volunteer for her sister Prim.
